PPE Innovations in the Face of COVID-19
COVID-19 has changed the way the world operates. Since the initial outbreaks began, people, businesses, and organizations have been working tirelessly to create safer, more affordable solutions to slow the spread.
Like the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention.” Our daily lives now consist of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), so many individuals have begun to overhaul and improve these supplies however they can. Here’s a look at some of our favorite innovations, so far.
One of the largest challenges of creating effective PPE is developing a solution that’s widely available and yet sanitary. Even more difficult, still, is the challenge of creating PPE that can be reused in order to cut back on waste and help mitigate the PPE shortage.
Many organizations have been developing PPE from non-traditional media. Some have created 3D-printed masks, while others have used more familiar materials. One of our favorites is this silicone mask which is created to be easy to disinfect. Our team even got involved by 3D printing PPE for a local hospital!
As these innovations continue, we expect to see more accessible and efficient options to help protect healthcare workers around the world.
Utilizing Artificial Intelligence
When people wear masks, it makes it hard for people who rely on lipreading to understand and communicate effectively. This can include people who have hearing loss and people who are learning another language.
Several solutions for this have been developed lately. They range from masks with clear panels around the mouth to Smart Masks that speak and translate speech into several different languages.
This is just another way that our industry is evolving to be more accessible and accommodating for all.
COVID-19 has taken a toll on people throughout the world. Still, in the face of adversity, our industry continues to rise to the challenge and protect patients and healthcare workers in new and innovative ways.
